Nuts

Metal nuts and hex nuts are securing fasteners that are designed to be mated with a bolt with a similar threading pattern. Hex nut products function through a temporary joint holding structure that is created between the nut and bolt when matched. Nut bolt fastening products can be used for a wide range of applications and are offered in many unique sizes and shapes.

How to Install a Hex Nut

Since six-sided hex nuts are now the basic standard shaped nut in the industry, a wrench, socket or driver tool can be easily used to tighten or loosen hex nuts that requires a tool. Other types of nuts, such as a knurled nut or wing nut can be tightened or loosened by hand, which in certain applications is extremely useful.

Hex Nut, Locknut Options

If you are in the market for locknuts, you know, or will certainly find out, how many different options there are. For every conceivable job out there, there is a nut bolt product that was designed specifically for that job. Below you will find an assortment of hex nut categories, each of which contain links to the nuts within the specified category.

Acorn Nuts

The Acorn Nut name is derived from its shape, which resembles an acorn that falls from a tree. They feature a closed end dome top, which is specifically designed to protect the external thread of the bolt that adjoins the nut. Acorn nuts are also sought due to their keen aesthetic value.

All Metal Locknuts

Two-way reversible Locknuts can be used either top-up or top-down and feature indentations on the outside part of the nut, which is designed to distort the internal threads to increase resistance on the mating part, creating a locking mechanism in the center of the nut.

Coupling Nuts

Coupling nuts are also referred to as rod couplings. They are used to join two externally threaded parts of equal thread diameter and pitch, often two pieces for threaded rod. Coupling Nuts are also used to make up long rod assemblies from shorter lengths of rods.

Finished Hex Nuts

Finished hex nuts are the most versatile and widely used commercial nut design in existence. Finished Hex Nuts are often used with hex cap screws and carriage bolts when a heavier, stronger and thicker nut is needed. They are mostly used in industrial applications but can be found anywhere that requires a heavier load on the nut.

Heavy Hex Nuts

Heavy Hex Nuts are high strength nuts that are designed to be stronger than the bolts assembled with them. They are also thicker and wider across the flats than a same size diameter finished hex nut.

Hex Jam Nuts

Hex Jam Nuts are designed to be tightened against its work surface and a finished or heavy hex nut is tightened against the jam nut to keep it from loosening. They can also be used to secure an item on a fastener without applying force to that object. This is achieved by first tightening one of the nuts onto the item.

Machine Screw Nuts

Machine Screw Nuts are designed to be used specifically with machine screws. Machine Screw Nuts are often used with hex cap screws, socket cap screws and bolts and are used for a wide range of fastening applications.

Metric Flange Nuts

Metric Flange Nuts contain a metric thread pitch and are manufactured with a wide flange at one end that acts as an integrated, non-spinning washer. This serves to distribute the pressure of the nut over the part being secured, reducing the chance of damage to the part and making it less likely to loosen as a result of an uneven fastening surface.

Nylon Insert Locknuts

The nylon material of a nylon insert locknut prevents loosening from vibration and contains cross threads that help to stop the nut from backing off the fastener. Basically, Nylon Insert Locknuts are a hex nut with a nylon-filled collar at its back end. When a screw reaches the collar, the threads and nylon form a tight, frictional bond, restricting movement of the screw when it encounters vibration.

Square Nuts

These tried and true metal nuts are specifically designed to be used with square head bolts. Compared to standard hex nuts, Square Nuts maintain greater surface contact with the part being fastened and therefore provide greater resistance to loosening.

Stainless Steel Hex Nuts

Stainless Steel Hex Nuts can be installed anywhere that standard hex nuts are used, but they can also be used in applications where corrosion is an issue. The fastener nut’s stainless steel construction protects it when used in corrosive environments.

Structural Nuts

High strength Structural Nuts are specifically designed to be stronger than the bolts they are coupled with. These six-sided hex nuts are also thicker and wider across the flats than a same size diameter finished hex nut.

Tee Nuts

Tee Nuts are used in wood, composite, particle or other soft material applications and are constructed from an internal threaded barrel and flange, with small prongs (usually 3 or 4) that dig into the soft installation surface.

Wing Nuts

Wing Nuts feature two wings which allow for the fastener to be tightened or loosened by hand. They are commonly seen on assemblies that require adjustment or are not permanent. Wing Nuts are commonly used when convenience overrides extreme tightening torque.
